Activity 4

Were you all surprised? Today we spontaneously acted our lines of re-write, we had a lot of laughs and learned a great deal about the language and the play! We had time before class to read each other's translations and think about ways in which we can alter language to better understand a text and to write for different audiences and purposes. For activity 4, I'd like you write a short response to the following questions:

  • Why did you choose to translate your passage in such and such a style?
  • Why does this language best represent your character?

My partner and I chose to write in AAVE because we wanted to set the play in a more modern time period. We both really enjoyed the film O and understand that there is still a stigma in some communities regarding an interracial relationship. We thought this language best represented our characters because in a modern day setting it seemed like Othello would be best represented by using something other than the English we learn in school. We had to make him seem like an outsider.
